How to Tell if Your Pet Isn’t Feeling Well

Pets cannot tell us when something feels wrong, so it is important to pay attention to small changes in their behavior, appetite, and energy. Sometimes the first signs of illness are easy to miss, especially if your pet is usually quiet or independent.

One common sign is a change in eating or drinking habits. If your pet suddenly refuses food, drinks much more or less than usual, or seems uninterested in treats, it may be a sign they are not feeling well. Changes in bathroom habits can also be important, including diarrhea, constipation, accidents in the house, vomiting, or straining.

Energy levels matter too. A pet who is suddenly hiding, sleeping more, acting restless, limping, whining, shaking, or avoiding normal activities may need closer attention. You may also notice changes in breathing, coughing, sneezing, drooling, scratching, or unusual body posture.

Personality changes can be another clue. If your normally friendly pet becomes withdrawn, clingy, irritated, or aggressive, discomfort or illness could be the reason.

At Alissa’s Pet Services, we know how important it is to notice the little things. During walks, drop-in visits, boarding, and overnight care, we pay attention to your pet’s routine so we can help spot anything unusual.

If your pet seems very sick, is having trouble breathing, is repeatedly vomiting, appears weak, or you are worried something is wrong, contact your veterinarian right away.
